Pennsylvania Family Harvest |

The Pennsylvania family harvest turkey fry came off this year with one mishap unrelated to the turkey fry. More on that later. The weather was co-operative in the morning with brief periods of sun. The afternoon ended with some ominous dark clouds but only a very light mist fell as the sun went down.

The neighboring families arrived in the back yard one by one on a pre-set schedule, bringing their Thanksgiving turkeys to be cooked in the hot oil. And while their bird was being cooked to a succulent golden brown, Thanksgiving well wishes were exchanged along with quite a few toasts from all that had gathered. There were many hors d’oeuvres to be sampled: corn chowder, Swedish meatballs, brie cheese and crackers, and golden French fried sweet potatoes from the fryer just to name a few. And the guests brought their favorite beverage to share which they had previously been carefully tucked away in their wine cellars, garages, and refrigerators just for the occasion!

Our dinner was hosted by Jeff and Susan Brooks, Jeanette’s daughter and son-in-law, and did not begin until after 4:00 pm. The after dinner festivities had to be cut short as Jeanette’s grandson Colin who drove in from Baltimore, injured his knee in a local football game that morning and had to be transported by ambulance to the hospital in the evening as his knee had swollen to about three times normal size due to a broken blood vessel. Fortunately, nothing else seems to be broken, and everyone eventually settled down to a good nights rest.
