Tulips and Lilacs in the Finger Lakes |
| 4/28/2010 5:47:41 PM |
The parade of spring flowers just keeps coming. Even though my tulips were nibbled on by some deer very early on, those plants which were untouched have bloomed beautifully this Finger Lakes spring. The mix of colors that I planted worked out well, and Jeanette has been enjoying them on the table, even though tulips don’t last long inside.

The lilacs are now at about half... Read More |

The Beauty and Tenacity of Living in the Finger Lakes |
| 4/25/2010 4:38:44 AM |

The canyon of Taughannock Falls near Ithaca is a natural wonder some 12,000 years in the making. It was chiseled into the rock by floods and freezing waters over the course of the last twelve millenniums. The waters of Taughannock Falls flow into one of the Finger Lakes.

And yet on the rim of the canyon, the vegetation clings for dear life. Take a look at the old pines... Read More |

Sampling Spring in the Finger Lakes |
| 4/20/2010 6:08:28 AM |
| I visited the Southern Tier of the Finger Lakes recently on a business trip. My travels took me on a path that I have traveled many many times but never tire of. And on this trip, I see glimpses of Canandaigua Lake, Seneca Lake, and Cayuga Lake. I travel through Geneva, and then head south on route 96 to Ovid, Interlaken, Trumansburg, Jacksonville, Ithaca, Danby, Candor,... Read More |

Spring's Splendor Has Arrived in the Finger Lakes |
| 4/14/2010 6:21:11 PM |

The outdoor spring flower show in the Finger Lakes is at its peak. I just love the forsythia bushes. For most of the growing season, they are just a green bush. But come spring, they are the first of the flowering bushes to bloom. And after a long cold winter of only white, gray, and brown colors, the beautiful yellow of the forsythia bushes sure brightens up one’s... Read More |

Springtime on the Farm in the Finger Lakes |
| 4/11/2010 6:05:26 AM |

It’s springtime in the Finger Lakes and a family farmer’s fancy turns to a new tractor as he thinks about all of the work that has to be done on dairy farms, grain farms, family farms, fruit farms, or market farms. While visiting Empire Tractor’s (click here) open house in Atlanta, NY on April 1, I got to see the new 8N Boomer tractor. This is a new model from New Holland... Read More |

A Perfect Spring Day in the Finger Lakes |
| 4/7/2010 5:06:05 PM |

On Easter Sunday, Jeanette and I traveled to Skaneateles for our Easter dinner. We knew that there would be a long line at the Sherwood Inn, but we also knew that the wait would be worth the trip. Skaneateles Lake, one of the five largest Finger Lakes, shone in the warm spring sun. The crystal clear waters flowing out of the lake is something that has to be seen to be... Read More |

Family Farms in the Finger Lakes |
| 4/5/2010 4:57:24 AM |

I attended Empire Tractor’s open house (click here) on April 1st in Atlanta, NY. I was there to sell my book, “The Last of the Family Farms.” I met the president of Empire Tractor Inc., Tim Call, who is from Batavia, NY and he bought a copy of my book for his father. I owe a great deal of thanks to Bill Harford of the Atlanta, NY dealership and his wife Michele for... Read More |

Happy Easter from the Finger Lakes |
| 4/3/2010 4:41:26 AM |

Today was my mother’s birthday. She never really asked for much. Just some simple garden tools, some good soil, and some rotted cow manure so she could provide for her family. She praised God for sending the rain and sunshine to her tomato plants so they would grow strong and tall. She planted geraniums on the front porch so that they would look nice to all those who...
