The Calm after a Finger Lakes Storm

Recently we had a day of heavy rains here in the Canandaigua which tested the capacity of all of the drainage ditches and culverts. Here in Deep Run, the retention pond was almost filled to capacity and doing what a retention pond is supposed to do – retain the heavy runoff and only allow a small amount of water to flow into Canandaigua Lake.

How is Your Garden Doing in the Finger Lakes

Nancy, my sister-in-law out in California recently asked me how my garden was doing in the Finger Lakes. My brother Sylvan raises a huge garden in Modesto, California and because of the climate there, he can start planting in February.

I’ve been struggling this year trying to take care of two gardens. The one here at my home is my vegetable and flower garden and it’s doing... Read More

The Canandaigua Lady Misses Out on Fourth of July Celebrations

I was wondering why I haven’t seen the Canandaigua Lady pass by Deep Run Park on her evening cruise run. But now we know: The Lady has been moved to Woodville at the southern end of Canandaigua Lake for some needed repairs to the hydraulic system.

The 26 year old boat is the reason that Jeanette and I moved to Canandaigua and the Finger Lakes. We were treated to a lunch on... Read More

Graduation Time in the Finger Lakes

Michael, Christian, And Michelle

Everywhere you look there seems to be a graduation party! Up the street, next door, in Canandaigua, in East Rochester, everywhere in the Finger Lakes, all are celebrating the completion of 12 years in public school. I’m trying hard to remember my graduation. There were 62 seniors that graduated from my little high school in Smithville, Ohio. We were all grown up then. We... Read More

Of Money and Manure in the Finger Lakes

Lillies in the Garden

What does money and manure have in common? Both are no good unless you spread them around! And that’s what I did with my pile of organic compost yesterday. The potatoes are now nicely hilled with rich organic compost and my tomato plants are top dressed with a thick layer of the compost. The compost helps to hold the moisture in the ground as well as providing nourishment... Read More

Garage Sales in the Finger Lakes

Just as soon as the weather clears in the spring, out come the signs and tables on the lawn announcing a garage sale. They are quite popular here in the Finger Lakes. They give one an incentive to the clean out your garage and basement of all of those unneeded items that have accumulated over the years.

Kids and Dogs

The Chapin Church in Canandaigua recently held its annual garage sale.... Read More

Family Farming in the Finger Lakes

My Onion Patch

The organic fertilizer for my garden arrived today which means that I have my work cut out for me. It is composted locally and is especially blended for raising mushrooms, but works quite well on gardens too. This year I am using it as a top dressing for the tomatoes and also to hill up the potatoes in the potato patch. Nothing fancy when it comes to spreading the stuff -... Read More

Memorial Day Preparations in the Finger Lakes

Poppies

It seems like Memorial Day comes sooner and sooner each year. Our spring came early this year in the Finger Lakes, but for some reason I seem to be running late in doing all of the things that need to be done in my lawn and garden. The poppies are blooming out in the garden. Their lovely bright orange blooms are a sure sign that Memorial Day is just around the corner. They... Read More

Mother's Day in the Finger Lakes

Chapin Methodist Church

The old church that I attend dates back to 1853. The Chapin Methodist Church was built here in the Finger Lakes before the days of the Civil War. The paint on the Chapin Church is peeling, the stained glass windows hang precariously in their leaded frames, and even the foundation cement which was hand-mixed is crumbling from the passage of time.

But what is more important... Read More

Tulips and Lilacs in the Finger Lakes

Deep Run Tulip Bed

The parade of spring flowers just keeps coming. Even though my tulips were nibbled on by some deer very early on, those plants which were untouched have bloomed beautifully this Finger Lakes spring. The mix of colors that I planted worked out well, and Jeanette has been enjoying them on the table, even though tulips don’t last long inside.

Spring's Splendor Has Arrived in the Finger Lakes

Forsythia Bushes and Canandaigua Lake

The outdoor spring flower show in the Finger Lakes is at its peak. I just love the forsythia bushes. For most of the growing season, they are just a green bush. But come spring, they are the first of the flowering bushes to bloom. And after a long cold winter of only white, gray, and brown colors, the beautiful yellow of the forsythia bushes sure brightens up one’s... Read More

Happy Easter from the Finger Lakes

Easter Daffodils in the Finger Lakes

Today was my mother’s birthday. She never really asked for much. Just some simple garden tools, some good soil, and some rotted cow manure so she could provide for her family. She praised God for sending the rain and sunshine to her tomato plants so they would grow strong and tall. She planted geraniums on the front porch so that they would look nice to all those who... Deer Me What Happened To My Finger Lakes Tulips?

Tulips at Deeprun

Spring is here and on Saturday morning we had a cool 17 degrees. It was downright cold as our normal low temperature is supposed to be 29 degrees. I checked out my tulips and saw that they were visited by a deer when we were on vacation. Last year the deer left them alone, but this year I am not so lucky. I will have to get busy and buy some deer netting to keep them... Read More

Home in the Finger Lakes

Canandaigua Lake

Our two weeks of vacation in Florida have come to an end and now we have returned to our home in the Finger Lakes. Canandaigua Lake glistened in the warm spring afternoon sun. People were out for a walk just enjoying the lake and the sun.

The runoff from recent spring rains has filled the lake and the water is running swiftly in the outlet near City Pier. On the City Pier,... Read More

Time for a Finger Lakes Vacation

Big Charley's Icy Winter Home

To all of my readers who live along the East Coast of the United States, I am dedicating this blog to you. All winter long you have been sending me pictures of the record snow falls around Baltimore, Philadelphia, Atlantic City, and Washington, and I have been very unsympathetic as Mother Nature has been very kind to us here in the Finger Lakes this winter.

Federally Funded Projects in the Finger Lakes - Part II

Ontario County Courthouse, Canandaigua

In a recent post, I noted that Ontario County in Canandaigua received a grant of $12,000 in 1856 from the Federal government to provide for a new post office and a Federal court room. The old Ontario County court house built nearby in 1824 had outlived its usefulness, and it was time to build a new facility. The Ontario County Board of Supervisors sold the old court house... Federally Funded Projects in the Finger Lakes

Ontario County Courthouse, Canandaigua

I walked along Main Street in Canandaigua and took a few pictures of the Ontario County Courthouse. This magnificent building date’s back to 1857-1858 when it was first constructed and then extensively rebuilt in 1908-1909. Restoration work was begun in 1981 and completed in March of 1988.

Sunshine and Ice in the Finger Lakes

Skating on Canandaigua Lake

With the local schools on winter break, a few people ventured outside to enjoy an afternoon of sunshine in the Finger Lakes. I’m sure that it was the warmth of the beautiful February sun that drew these youngsters and their mother out onto the Canandaigua Lake ice. I’m amazed at how well these youngsters can skate. Note the small boy who is "skating" in his... Read More

No Groundhogs in Sight in the Finger Lakes

Canandaigua Lake from Deep Run Point

The sun was shinning brightly but the winds were steady with the temperatures hovering around 25 degrees on February 1. No animals in sight. The ducks were gone, the geese were gone, and I didn’t see a single groundhog! I often wonder how the geese can fly when it is so cold. Do they do Yoga exercises before they take off so they don‘t get a cramp in their wings? And what... Read More

A Delayed Christmas Gift in the Finger Lakes

'Splash' Amaryllis

The Amaryllis bulbs that my brother Sylvan and sister-in-law Nancy from Modesto California sent for Christmas are in full bloom now and brightening up our living room. The bulbs were sent from whiteflowerfarm.com (click here) and all you have to do is open the box and begin watering the bulbs once a week. The first one to bloom is called ‘Splash’ which has double red... Read More
