The Calm after a Finger Lakes Storm |

Recently we had a day of heavy rains here in the Canandaigua which tested the capacity of all of the drainage ditches and culverts. Here in Deep Run, the retention pond was almost filled to capacity and doing what a retention pond is supposed to do – retain the heavy runoff and only allow a small amount of water to flow into Canandaigua Lake.

I was wondering why I haven’t seen the Canandaigua Lady pass by Deep Run Park on her evening cruise run. But now we know: The Lady has been moved to Woodville at the southern end of Canandaigua Lake for some needed repairs to the hydraulic system.

Up the street, next door, in Canandaigua, in East Rochester, everywhere in the Finger Lakes, all are celebrating the completion of 12 years in public school. What does money and manure have in common? Both are no good unless you spread them around! And that’s what I did with my pile of organic compost yesterday. The potatoes are now nicely hilled with rich organic compost and my tomato plants are top dressed with a thick layer of the compost. Just as soon as the weather clears in the spring, out come the signs and tables on the lawn announcing a garage sale. They are quite popular here in the Finger Lakes. They give one an incentive to the clean out your garage and basement of all of those unneeded items that have accumulated over the years.

The organic fertilizer for my garden arrived today which means that I have my work cut out for me. It is composted locally and is especially blended for raising mushrooms, but works quite well on gardens too. It seems like Memorial Day comes sooner and sooner each year. Our spring came early this year in the Finger Lakes, but for some reason I seem to be running late in doing all of the things that need to be done in my lawn and garden. Mother's Day in the Finger Lakes |

The old church that I attend dates back to 1853. The Chapin Methodist Church was built here in the Finger Lakes before the days of the Civil War. The paint on the Chapin Church is peeling, the stained glass windows hang precariously in their leaded frames, and even the foundation cement which was hand-mixed is crumbling from the passage of time.

The parade of spring flowers just keeps coming. Even though my tulips were nibbled on by some deer very early on, those plants which were untouched have bloomed beautifully this Finger Lakes spring. The mix of colors that I planted worked out well, and Jeanette has been enjoying them on the table, even though tulips don’t last long inside.

The outdoor spring flower show in the Finger Lakes is at its peak. I just love the forsythia bushes. For most of the growing season, they are just a green bush. But come spring, they are the first of the flowering bushes to bloom. Today was my mother’s birthday. She never really asked for much. Just some simple garden tools, some good soil, and some rotted cow manure so she could provide for her family. Deer Me What Happened To My Finger Lakes Tulips? |

Spring is here and on Saturday morning we had a cool 17 degrees. It was downright cold as our normal low temperature is supposed to be 29 degrees. I checked out my tulips and saw that they were visited by a deer when we were on vacation. Last year the deer left them alone, but this year I am not so lucky. Our two weeks of vacation in Florida have come to an end and now we have returned to our home in the Finger Lakes. Canandaigua Lake glistened in the warm spring afternoon sun. People were out for a walk just enjoying the lake and the sun.

I walked along Main Street in Canandaigua and took a few pictures of the Ontario County Courthouse. This magnificent building date’s back to 1857-1858 when it was first constructed and then extensively rebuilt in 1908-1909. Restoration work was begun in 1981 and completed in March of 1988.

The sun was shinning brightly but the winds were steady with the temperatures hovering around 25 degrees on February 1. No animals in sight.
