Family Farms in the Finger Lakes

Mowing Season Temporarily Interrupted!

My book signing went well at the Gorham Free Library Yesterday. There were 17 people in attendance as I relived what it was like to have grown up on a family farm out in Ohio (click here). Many who attended had either grown up on family farms or are still actively engaged in agriculture.

I spoke with a man who had to round up the cows in the pasture for milking just like I... Read More

Book Signing at the Gorham Free Library

My thanks to Diane Hovey for inviting me to the Gorham Free Library to have a book signing on Sunday the 7th of March at 2:00 pm. I’ll be talking about my book, “The Last of the Family Farms” in which I recount my childhood experiences of growing up on a family farm near Wooster, Ohio.

Gorham Free Libary, Gorham, NY

I am excited to meet my neighbors and friends who live in the Town of Gorham. A few who... Read More

Federally Funded Projects in the Finger Lakes - Part II

Ontario County Courthouse, Canandaigua

In a recent post, I noted that Ontario County in Canandaigua received a grant of $12,000 in 1856 from the Federal government to provide for a new post office and a Federal court room. The old Ontario County court house built nearby in 1824 had outlived its usefulness, and it was time to build a new facility. The Ontario County Board of Supervisors sold the old court house... Sunshine and Ice in the Finger Lakes

Skating on Canandaigua Lake

With the local schools on winter break, a few people ventured outside to enjoy an afternoon of sunshine in the Finger Lakes. I’m sure that it was the warmth of the beautiful February sun that drew these youngsters and their mother out onto the Canandaigua Lake ice. I’m amazed at how well these youngsters can skate. Note the small boy who is "skating" in his... Read More

No Groundhogs in Sight in the Finger Lakes

Canandaigua Lake from Deep Run Point

The sun was shinning brightly but the winds were steady with the temperatures hovering around 25 degrees on February 1. No animals in sight. The ducks were gone, the geese were gone, and I didn’t see a single groundhog! I often wonder how the geese can fly when it is so cold. Do they do Yoga exercises before they take off so they don‘t get a cramp in their wings? And what... Read More

A Delayed Christmas Gift in the Finger Lakes

'Splash' Amaryllis

The Amaryllis bulbs that my brother Sylvan and sister-in-law Nancy from Modesto California sent for Christmas are in full bloom now and brightening up our living room. The bulbs were sent from whiteflowerfarm.com (click here) and all you have to do is open the box and begin watering the bulbs once a week. The first one to bloom is called ‘Splash’ which has double red... Read More

Still Fighting the Virus in the Finger Lakes

About a week ago, my desktop computer was hit by a virus called “Internet Security 2010.” It totally locked up my computer and prevented me from writing my blog, reading the news, and watching the financial markets. My computer is still at the local computer hospital. I called to find out the status but as of last Saturday, it’s still in recovery!

Isn’t it amazing how... Read More

A Silent Attack in the Finger Lakes

I usually publish a new blog either on the weekend or during the week if I am particularly ambitious. But last Saturday night, my desk top computer was hit by something called, “Internet Security 2010” which completely blocked me from using my computer. The only thing that I could do was to go to their website which asked for a payment of $49.95 to unblock my computer. It... Read More

A Brief Moment of Sun in the Finger Lakes

Ontario County Park Along East Lake Road

It was late in the afternoon when the sun made a brief appearance in the Finger Lakes so I went for a walk along Canandaigua Lake. The little Ontario Country Park along East Lake Road was deserted but the sun brightened the snow and ice and made for a sharp contrast against the cold blue waters of Canandaigua Lake. This small county park has a few picnic tables and some... Read More

It's What We Expect in the Finger Lakes

Sunrise Over Crystal Ridge Rd.

Morning of the second week in January breaks in the Finger Lakes. It’s a crisp 18 degrees here in Canandaigua but it’s supposed to warm up to 25 degrees today. The weatherman says to expect abut an inch of snow this afternoon and one to three inches of snow overnight. And by the beautiful sunrise that that we saw this morning, I would say that he is correct! It’s the... Read More

Celebrating another Birthday in the Finger Lakes

Freezing Waters Around Squaw Island, Canandaigua

Since Friday is my birthday, it’s time to step back and think about what another year in the Finger Lakes might bring. My parents never did celebrate birthdays. Nor did they pay much attention to what happened in the past. As my mother taught me, “what is past is over and done with” and “don’t cry over spilt milk!” As for myself, I am looking forward to another year in... Read More

Making the Best of Time in the Finger Lakes

Phelps Townhall, Phelps, NY

With everyone exhausted and worn out from all of the shopping and Christmas festivities, it’s time to step back, and reflect on all of the people, events, and places that we have visited this year in the Finger Lakes and to look forward to a new year.

Someone recently posed the following question, “If you could be granted just one Christmas wish, what would you wish for?”... Read More

Visited By An Angel in the Finger Lakes

A Finger Lakes Christmas Tree

I was mowing the church’s lawn one hot day this summer and wondering to myself what was I doing there when I could have been at home taking care of my own yard. A lady in an SUV stopped by the church and asked for directions to some road that I had never heard of. She showed me her map with some directions written down and I instantly recognized that she had traveled too... Read More

Being Thankful in the Finger Lakes

Harvestng Corn in the Finger Lakes

I had a good day last Saturday at Wegmans in Canandaigua for my book signing. And for that I am thankful. I did meet and talk with a lot of really nice people who appreciate all of the hard work and long hours that goes into raising vegetables, grains, and animals for food: Like the man who had been working 36 hours straight harvesting (shelling) corn in the field. Today,... Read More

Blowing Your Own Horn in the Finger Lakes

The Bupp Family Farm Cira 2008

I’m having a book signing at Wegmans here in Canandaigua this Saturday the 21st of November from 10 am – 3:00 pm. This is the second book signing that I have done at Wegmans in Canandaigua and I sure do appreciate the opportunity to talk to people who are still in the farming business – whether they have family farms, dairy farms, market farms, sell at a farmers market, or... Morning Breaks Over Canandaigua Lake

Morning Reflections Across Canandaigua Lake

As I was having my breakfast the other morning, I looked across Canandaigua Lake and saw the reflection of the sunrise coming from one of the homes on the west side of the Lake. The reflection was so bright that it almost blotted out the entire home with the first rays of the morning sun and the reflected light looked just like the fiery blaze of the sun itself.

November Calm in the Finger Lakes

Boathouses in Canandaigua

The boathouses along City Pier in Canandaigua are now closed for the winter. No more sunbathing on the balconies or going for a quick boat ride on Canandaigua Lake. The refrigerators have been unplugged and emptied of their contents.

Canandaigua Inn

The lakeside outdoor parties and weddings that were held at the Canandaigua Inn are over for the year. Just a few boats remain in their slips,... Read More

A Halloween Treat in The Finger Lakes

A Finger Lakes Sunrise

It was Halloween morning just at the beginning of the day and we were treated to the most beautiful sunrise that I have seen for a long time here in the Finger Lakes. At this time of day, the “trick or treaters” were fast asleep in their beds dreaming of all of the trick or treat fun which was to come later that evening.

Most of our Halloween day here in the Finger Lakes... Read More

Falling Objects In The Finger Lakes

I serve as groundskeeper for the Chapin United Methodist Church. Our little church is located on route 21 north about 3 miles from Canandaigua. This church goes way back to pre-Civil War days in 1853 when it was built. Part of the property consists of a grove of trees - an assortment of walnut, silver maple, buckeye, and maple trees which not only enhance the beauty and... Read More

Our First Snow In The Finger Lakes

Fall Mums Decorated With Snow

Old Man Winter has paid his first visit to the Finger Lakes on October 16. It should have been no surprise as we watched the first pictures on the television of heavy wet snow out in Colorado last week. But Colorado is so far away – right?

I made a mad dash last week to mow the yard, dig my red potatoes, and clean up the garden for its winter rest. I used the rototiller for... Read More
